About
Welcome to the delightful world of Keng Wan Hing, a charming eatery nestled in the heart of Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia. Located at 80, Jalan Gaya, Pusat Bandar Kota Kinabalu, this beloved bakery has been serving locals and visitors since 1984. Renowned for its mouthwatering freshly baked breads, Keng Wan Hing offers a range of goodies that have captured the hearts (and stomachs) of many.
The star of the show at Keng Wan Hing is undoubtedly its sweet-filled buns. As you step inside, the warm aroma of baking bread envelops you, inviting you to explore an array of tempting fillings. From the classic butter and red bean paste buns to the savory char siew buns and nostalgic pineapple buns, each pastry comes with its unique flavor profile that leaves you craving more. Paulina Nogaj’s experience resonates with many; she indulged in several buns each morning, praising their freshness, softness, and abundant fillings – ultimately giving them a perfect “10/10” rating.
For those who choose to dine in, Keng Wan Hing also offers a selection of noodle dishes that provide a delightful complement to their pastries. While reviews suggest that the noodle offerings might be somewhat average, the ambiance and versatility of the menu create a warm and welcoming breakfast spot, especially on bustling Sunday mornings when local regulars fill the seats.
One cannot overlook the charm of Keng Wan Hing's self-service model. Customers order and pay at the counter, allowing for a quick and efficient experience, which is perfect for those on the go. Regular customers recommend visiting early, as the buns tend to sell out fast, ensuring you'll get your hands on the freshest offerings straight from the oven.
Keng Wan Hing is more than just a bakery; it's a hidden gem that embodies the essence of traditional Malaysian flavors while maintaining a casual, homely vibe. As Irbin Manuel Veliz Isidro stated, the pastries boast a delightful taste combined with affordable pricing, making it an ideal stop for breakfast. Overall, Keng Wan Hing stands out in the Gaya Street area not just for the quality of its products, but for the sense of community it fosters, creating a dining experience that truly feels like home.
If you find yourself in Kota Kinabalu, make sure to pay a visit to this incredible establishment; it promises a culinary experience that combines tradition, flavor, and the warm touch of a local bakery.
“ Most of the people queue here for their freshly baked sweet filled bread with various fillings like butter, red bean paste tau sar or some porky flavour char siew bun. Also, they have pineapple filling bun too, which can be sold out fast fresh from oven. For dine in patrons, they serve various noodle dishes. I did a few times dined in but i just prefer the buns and bread, the food here is as mediocre as other establishment nearby. ”
“ Slightly overated. Food average. Drink average. Price acceptable for Gaya Street area. Self-service - order & pay at yhe cashier point, & pick up at food/drink counter. On Sunday morning, most of the regular customers will come & have their breakfast here ”
“ For four days in a row I had my morning coffee and a bun or three here. They are fresh, soft, with great flavours and a lot of filling. I have not tried anything else, but the pastry is 10/10! Come early as they only have as many! ”
“ A hidden gem! We found this quaint eatery while walking around our hotel. Trying out local bakeries has been one of my favorite things when going on trip and we were lucky enough to spot Keng Wan Hing just near our hotel. They offer quite an assortment of bread from fried, baked, and even steamed. All of the bread we tried (and we tried a lot!), my favorites include the black sesame bread and beef curry bread. My partner on the other hand really enjoyed their buttermilk and peanut butter breads! We had to go back the following day just to order more while we were still at Kota Kinabalu. Do check them out as we also saw they offer some rice and noodle dishes aside from bread. We didn’t get to try but the locals seem to enjoy them! ”
“ We initially thought we would have to pack these buns back to the hotel, but seeing available seats, we decided to dine in. It turned out to be a great choice! Among the items we tried, the pineapple bun (RM1.80) was a standout. Unlike the usual versions, which are either plain or butter-filled, this one had an actual pineapple-flavored filling. It truly lived up to its name—pineapple bun! The filling was refreshing and slightly tangy, making it unique and delightful. However, as shown in the picture, the buttery crust on top was quite crumbly and tended to fall apart after a bite, but it didn’t take away from the overall experience. We also ordered a char siu bao (RM2.50), which was equally impressive. The filling was flavorful and well-balanced, encased in soft, fluffy dough. It was so good that we decided to pack more before leaving. We got the pork bun (RM2.50) and one egg tart (RM1.50) to enjoy later, and both were exceptional. The pork bun was juicy, tender, and bursting with flavor—an absolute must-try. The egg tart, however, completely stole the show. It was silky smooth, with a perfectly balanced sweetness and a crisp, flaky crust. I deeply regret packing only one because it was hands down better than any I’ve had in West Malaysia. And at such a reasonable price, it’s an unbeatable deal. This shop, established in 1984, has truly stood the test of time, and it’s easy to see why. Everything here was reasonably priced, and the quality lived up to the reputation of this old establishment. If you’re in the area, don’t miss this spot—it’s a gem for anyone who loves traditional buns and pastries. We will definitely return for more! ”
